Treebone Garden

(1995-99)

In 1995, I was living in the mountains of New Mexico and had been making furniture for about six years. I’d already introduced natural oil and earth pigments to the finishing process, but the curvature that appeared with the Treebone Garden series was a radical departure from the more traditional lines of the work thus far.

Along with the organic form, I developed a natural tree resin and earth pigment oil glaze for a layered, translucent surface.

Each piece was a study of—and hands-on practice in—harmonizing melds of land, plant and animal forms with practical functionality. A synthesis of feminine and masculine.

The most essential element in the transformation was shifting the basis of the work from architecture to landscape. This broader field held the integration of plant and animal forms that evolved over the next four years.
