The making
The Spiritus Naturalis series is inspired by the sensual, wonderfully odd forms of the local madrona trees. Each piece is a composite of numerous branch parts. I rearrange, carve, and joint them, then respond to their newfound form with copper tendrils, tusks and thorns.
As I start a piece, I don't know what I'm making. The intuitive process of moving it along one choice at a time reveals their nature.

There are innumerable choices throughout the making that feed into the feeling of motion and aliveness in a finished work.
As I begin the process of gently applying my own handmade, multi-colored flax fiber paper, I’m seeing a fluid, three-dimensional canvas ready for the play of landscapes in pattern, rhythm and sequence.
